- PORTO TAWNY W. & J. GRAHAM'S 30 YEARS DESCRIPTION
- The Porto Tawny 30 Years from the winery W. & J. Grahams is a fortified, deep and extremely pleasant red wine produced exclusively from grapes sourced from 5 famous crus
- Quinta dos Malvedos, Quinta do Tua, Quinta das Lages, Quinta da Vila Velha and Quinta do Vale de Malhadas
- of the Douro Valley, in the north of Portugal. This label is an Aged Tawny Porto, that is, a wine obtained from a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cao and Sousao grapes which is then fortified by the addition of wine alcohol or aguardente and which undergoes a long period of oxidative maturation in barrels, in this case for as long as 30 years. The winery, which owns approximately 7 hectares of organic vineyards, is a family
- run business now managed by the Symington family, who bought it in 1970 and personally oversee all aspects of production, from winemaking to bottling.
- W. & J. Graham's 30
- year
- old Tawny Porto is produced with carefully selected grapes, harvested by hand when they reach optimum ripeness, generally in October. The grapes are then taken to the winery where they are crushed, partly by hand in stone 'lagares', low pressing tanks, and partly, given the shortage of manpower, in automated stainless steel 'lagares'. The must then undergoes alcoholic fermentation for approximately 24 to 36 hours or until it reaches 5 to 9 degrees of alcohol, after which the fermentation is stopped by adding alcohol to create a fortified sweet wine. The Port thus obtained is then taken to Graham's Lodge in Villa Nova de Gaia, where it ages in 534
- litre oak barrels for a period of 30 years.
- The 30 Year Old Tawny Port from W. & J. Graham's has an orange
- red colour with amber highlights. The nose displays intense aromas of ripe fruit and toasted nuts, including cherry, raisins, dried figs, walnuts and hazelnuts, along with honeyed notes, caramelised hints and very pleasant woody nuances. In the mouth it has a great impact, dense, juicy and velvety, characterised by great balance and a very long finish that seems never to want to fade. This by W. & J. Graham's is a vital and fresh but extremely complex Aged Port, perfect for a moment of meditation or as a final act to conclude a dinner with friends.
