Description
Nestled on a privileged location in the Douro Demarcated Region (DOC), the Quinta do Crasto dates back to ancient times – the name ‘Crasto is derived from the Latin word castrum‘, which means ‘Roman fort. The estate covers 130 hectares of predominantly southern
facing slopes, extending from the banks of the river up to an altitude of nearly 600 meters. Many of the vineyards are planted on terraces carved from schist, the characteristic slate
like bedrock of the Douro that allows vine roots to penetrate deep into the ground in search of water. The grapes are rigorously inspected on a sorting table on arrival to the winery, completely destemmed and slightly crushed, fermented in stainless steel before ageing in French oak barrels for about 12 months.
