In the 19th century, it was customary at that time to "hermit" the wines. Bordeaux châteaux would add to their wines a certain amount of wine from the Rhône - specifically from the Hermitage region - whose syrah would enhance the structure and strength of the claret. In the 21st century, Château Palmer came up with the idea of bringing this forgotten tradition back to life. The aim is to create a unique wine, combining wine from Palmer and a small part of a great wine from the northern Côtes du Rhône. The Château Palmer Historical XIXth Century Wine 2020 (lot 20.20) is the 10th vintage produced by Palmer and this is a blend of: 44% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Syrah which has matured for 22 months in new French oak. They have only released a total of 3,000 bottles in May 2023. All individually packed in a wooden box. Here's what the Chateau says: "....Is this still a Bordeaux wine? It's better; a revitalization drawing on elsewhere to re-en-chant the here and now"
