- White Oak Distillery was founded in 1888 on the site of the distillery Eigashima, in the Japanese city of Akashi, near Kobe, and overlooking the sea of Osaka Bay, along the southern coast of the country. It was the first Japanese company to obtain a license for the distillation of spirits, in 1919, and is therefore traditionally considered the first company to begin producing whisky in the land of the rising sun.
