2017 Mascarello Giuseppe e Figlio Barolo Monprivato

An absolute CULT wine from Italy is the classic Barolo Monprivato by Guiseppe Mascarello. Not easy to find. Demand is greater than supply, so prices are rising year after year. To drink or as an investment. Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio is certainly one of the best producers of Barolo. The family business dates back to 1881 & to Monforte d'Alba. Maurizio (Morissio) bought the Castiglione Falletto Monprivato vineyard in 1904 and planted it with the Nebbiolo MichÃ¨t clone, before moving the winery to Monchiero in 1919. Son Giuseppe took over the company in 1923 and left the other family business of building materials to concentrate on wine. His son Mauro has been refining the estate since 1967, notably reducing yields, introducing a sorting table to ensure perfect bunches, and marketing Monprivato as a single vineyard wine from 1970. Since 1996 he has been joined by his son Giuseppe, a wine technician. Mauro's wife Maria Teresa manages the books. The Nebbiolo vineyard for the icon of Mascarello - the Barolo Monprivato, is located in the Grandcru area of Monprivato, in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto (CN). Harvest is around mid-October. The Nebbiolo grapes receive a traditional fermentation of approx. 20/26 days. Subsequently, the wine matures for about 30 months in Slavonian oak barrels and the wine is always only released after a minimum of four years after the harvest.
